‘Tis the Season
The month of December is a time where family and friends come together and share ones company and celebrate the holidays. Many different holidays are celebrated throughout the month including Christmas, Kwanzaa, and Chanukah.  With Scouting having such a rich tradition with bringing joy to youths lives.  We call upon Scouts at this time of year to help others when in need. This is a time where the Scouting community can give back to all of its volunteers and show how much of a difference they have made on thousands of youth throughout South Winds.

Walking in a Winter Wonderland
That’s right!! Winter Wonderland is right around the corner and staff is preparing to put on the most exciting event of the year. Tigers, Wolves, Bears, and even Webelos are invited to come out to the Winfield Fairgrounds on Saturday February 6^th and have the time of their life. Everything from fun games to awesome crafts and even great food will be provided. More information on the event will be provided at Round Tables. 

Udall Pack
Please join me in welcoming the newest members to the South Winds Scouting Family, Udall Methodist Church Cub Scout pack. The District is excited to have the opportunity to get scouts back in Udall and district staff and volunteers look forward to working with the new leaders to make a difference in the life’s of these boys. Trappers’ Rendezvous
Are you planning to go to the 33^rd annual Trappers’ Rendezvous?  It will be January 15-17, 2010, at Harvey County West Park.  Access all the information, Trappers’ Herald, t-shirt & hoodie order form, and registration at www.quivira.org homepage.

Eskimo Run
The 17th annual Eskimo Run is a fun activity for all Cub Scouts, sponsored by White Buffalo District.  This one day Winter Olympics provides a chance to be active in the outdoors during the winter, competing at several activities and games.  Scouts from each pack should form dens of 4 or 5 boys to participate (different ages & ranks can join in one den for the day).  Activities planned include: Sled Race, Ski Race, Snow Shoe Race, Snowball Throw, Penguin Bowling, Snow Snakes, and many more!  See www.quivira.org homepage for further details and registration.

Recharter Paperwork
Recharter paperwork and payment is due for troops, teams, crews, ships on Friday, January 15, and for packs on Friday, February 12.  Please seek the help of your assigned Unit Commissioner for assistance on your recharter.  If you don’t know how to contact your UC, please email District Commissioner Brent Jensen be_jensen@yahoo.com.

Roger with Midwest Iron was impressed with the help and told me that the Scouts, Leaders, and Parents that assisted with the effort were very hard workers and brought enough help to manage the influx of the aluminum coming in.  Please, take the time to email a thank you to Roger and/or thank him in person for his generous work he does with all of us in the Scouting world.

On-Time, On-Line Rechartering
Don’t wait until the last minute to complete rechartering.  Plan ahead and be successful.  Have your rechartering completed by Roundtable of the month it is due.

Ensure all information including names, contact information, and positions are updated during the recharter process in order to get information disseminated efficiently.

The deadline for rechartering troops, teams, and crews is January 15^th; however, you will not be able to begin troop, team, or crew rechartering on-line until December 1^st.  The deadline for rechartering packs is February 15^th; however, you will not be able to begin pack rechartering on-line until January 1^st.  The deadline for rechartering means that all paperwork with necessary signatures and payment is received by the Council office before the deadline.

 Scouting for Food
Our community service project collected food for the hungry amounting to 13,485 pounds collected.  The pounds of food collected and the participation this year exceeded last year.  Thanks to the many units who collected food, gave it to local food banks, and reported results.

Can you smell it?  It’s the smell of Popcorn popping!  The annual popcorn sale is going strong!  Our district is very fortunate to have a terrific popcorn Kernel, Georgia Henderson ghpopcorn@cox.net who assisted with a great sale last year, and she is back and ready to help your boys to go out there and sell, sell, sell!!!.

Georgia is working closely with your unit kernel to insure successful popcorn sales to benefit the youth in your unit.

Roundtable will be December 3^rd at 7:30 p.m. at the First Christian Church, In Independence Kansas.  This is a very important roundtable because Osage Nations District Nominations are due along with District Award of Merit need to completed and turned into the District Executive.  Please note we will be answering any questions about re-charter.  Also it will be the last get together before we ring in the New Year. 

Friends of Scouting

We are at the beginning stages for 2010’s Friends of Scouting Campaign that is already off to a very good start.  I think 2010 has the promise to be one of the best years ever in Osage Nation!

Popcorn

Well popcorn is in the final stages with popcorn pick up orders being on December 11 and 12, at Econo Machines in Chanute.  Every unit in that is selling Popcorn has done a terrific job this year!  A big thank you goes out to all youth and volunteers who helped make this sale a complete success. 

 Osage Nation District Dinner

The District Dinner will be held on February 13^th 2010.  Doors will be open at 5:30 p.m.; dinner will be served at 6 p.m.  We would love to see everyone form Osage Nation attend, and join in the celebration!

Aquatics – The two attached fliers are for the Cub Scout & Boy Scout Aquatics event for 2010.  Susan Couey is holding this event for anyone who wants to earn their Merit Badge, Belt Loop, Aquanaut, or swim test for summer camps.  There will be no late registrations and no registrations at the door, so if you want to take part, please register on time!!!  If you have any questions, please call Susan Couey 776-6549.

District Dinner – On January 30th we will be hosting our Annual District Dinner to celebrate the achievements everyone has made through 2009.  We will be recognizing leaders for their achievements through this past year so if you know of someone who has shown tremendous scouting spirit, please nominate them by sending why they should be recognized to wanda_roehl@hawkerbeechcraft.com and make sure they are in attendance to be recognized.  A flier and registration form will be coming out soon but mark your calendars now!  

Recharter – Your unit commissioner has your recharter packet right now.  You should be hearing from them soon if you have not already.  If you do not know who your unit commissioner is, please contact John Davis 685-7929 and he can get the information for you.  If you have not gone through this process yet, or even if you have, you are invited to my recharter trainings held at the December and January Roundtables.  Lastly, the price of membership has increased to $15 per person for a year’s membership.  Please plan your unit budgets accordingly.  In all of your recharter packets you will find training update sheets.  Please fill them out as the council is trying to update all training records so we can make certain tasks easier for all of you.  Online Tour permits require leaders to be trained in specific courses and recharter requires you to complete certain trainings.  Having this information updated will help smooth many things out.  

Training -   For those of you who are needing certain training updated or are a new leader and need trained in your position, we have the events for you.  Attached is the current training schedule for High Plains.  We have many locations and times that will fit your schedule.  We are asking that everyone who is planning on attending these trainings to please call ahead and reserve your space.  This will ensure the instructor will have enough copies of handouts and enough space for all wanting to be trained.  Every Scout Deserves A Trained Leader!  

Popcorn – The sale has begun and I have already had two scouts knock on my door!!  They each got a sale and from the looks of it, a lot more too.   I hope all our scouts are selling tons of popcorn just like those two boys!  Everyone be safe when selling and if you run into any issues, please contact our District Kernel, Bev Cory at hppopcorn@yahoo.com.  

FOS – It’s the FOS season again and this year, we are trying to make it as easy on everyone as possible.  Friends Of Scouting is the councils annual find drive and I would like to schedule an FOS presentation with every unit in the district this year.  The presentations will take only 5-10 minutes and can be at any of your events.  Courts of Honor, Blue & Gold Banquets, Pinewood Derby’s. etc…  are all great places to host an FOS presentation.  Please email ryan.heikes@scouting.org to let us know when you would like us to come out.  The sooner we present in your unit, the sooner we will hit our goal and be able to fund the fantastic events scheduled for 2010.   As always, thank you for what you are doing, and if you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please let me know.

Webelos Woods

What an event!  Over 350 Webelos, plus Boy Scouts on staff & adults, totaled over 800 people at Camp Kanza for a weekend of fun Scouting activities.  The weekend was geared toward introducing your Webelos Scouts to what awaits them as Boy Scouts. Many thanks to the adult leaders, youth & adult staff, and great weather afforded for the weekend.

South Winds District Golf Tournament will be held November 21, 2009 at Quail Ridge Golf Course in WInfield Kansas.  Registration and lunchwill begin at 12: 00 p.m. with a 1:00 p.m. Shotgun start.  The format is a 4 person scramble.  Click here  for registration flyer.
