Kanza District is starting this camping season off on a high note.   So far the year is going well with success achieved during Sign up for Scouting.  The District continues great momentum with the national Good Turn for America project - Scouting for Food.  Kanza District achieved its goals on schedule and looks to keep this momentum going into the rest of the activities for the year including FOS and continuing getting kids involved with our program.

Other up coming events include:

Popcorn Public Sale begins November 7
District Round Table and District Committee Meeting – November 3, 2009

High Plains

November 2, 2009 by quivirascouts
High Plains – As we move into the fall and a seemingly early winter, everyone needs to be aware of all the activities that are going on, Please forward this on to anyone who might find any of this information useful.  I am trying to reach as many people as possible, so if you would like to join the email list please email ryan.heikes@scouting,org and I will add you to the list.

Pow Wow classes are filling up fast, so if you want to ensure you are in the classes you want to take, please send in your registration ASAP.  Did you know that you can complete your registration online?  it’s easy, just go to www.quivira.org and click on the Pow Wow icon, fill in your info and your done!  No need to travel to the office to register!  If you have any questions about classes, please contact Tina Coffey 529-3995 or Mike Smith 650-0116 and they can answer all your questions.

Scouting For Food – We have had a few packs and troops report in what they have collected and so far it has shown that the communities we live in are very generous.  Please continue to collect food for the less fortunate in our communities, as it will help many families get through these tough economic times.  If your unit has collected food already and have not reported it, or if you collect food in the next few weeks, please reply to this email and let me know how you did.

Roundtable Training – We have a host of trainings for your adult leadership at every roundtable.  This is the best opportunity for your adults to be trained and many of you are not taking advantage of it.  The training staff for the district are volunteers just like yourself, and they have volunteered their time to train others so you can be as successful as possible in the scouting world.  These are great opportunities for your leadership to take advantage of, so please review the attached training schedule and send your leaders to be trained.  It will make a world of difference in your program!!!

Recharter is right around the corner!  Your unit commissioner should be coming around with your recharter packet here in about a month.  Your Unit Commissioner should also be conducting unit inventories with your unit’s leadership.  This will make recharter much easier for you and make the process much faster.  I will also be holding two trainings on the recharter process at our December 3rd and January 7th roundtables beginning at 7:30.  If you are new to the process or want a refresher course please be in attendance.

In addition to the Recharter trainings, I am wanting to hold trainings of your choosing at Roundtables.  I will be following the recharter training with Online Advancement training, and Online Tour Permit training in the following months.  If there is something that you are having difficulty with, please let me know and I will hold a training on the subject.  This is up to you, if there is something that you would like to know, I will be available to train anyone on it, but I need to know what is giving you trouble, please let me know and I will schedule it.

Commissioner’s should be conducting unit inventories with all cubmasters and scoutmasters in the next few months.  Unit Inventories are a way of ensuring everyone taking part in scouting is registered.  It should only take a few minutes and can be done over the phone.  If you do not know who your commissioner is or you have not completed your unit inventory yet, please let us know and we can help you.  Units that complete these have a much easier time with advancements, recharter, and become better organized.  If you would like to conduct your unit inventory early, please contact John Davis at dav1229@sbcglobal.net

End of Year Awards – We have had some fantastic volunteers over the course of the year, and if you think they should be recognized for their outstanding work, then you need to nominate them for one or more of these awards!  Remember, if you do not nominate them, they might not get nominated at all!
Silver Beaver – Given to an outstanding volunteer that has served at the unit, district, and council levels for a number of years.  Shows an outstanding commitment to scouting at all levels.  Highest award a Council can bestow, and is awarded at Council Dinner in February.
District Award of Merit – Awarded to a volunteer who has shown an outstanding dedication to scouting at the Unit level and the District Level.  Highest award a District can bestow, and is awarded at District Dinner in January.

In addition to the awards above, there are many other awards that are available at all levels of leadership, such as Cubmaster and Scoutmaster award of Merit, Den Leader awards, etc..  Please recognize the outstanding volunteers that you see in you units, they deserve it.

Opportunity – We are looking for a District Webmaster.  We have an adult who will help train and mentor but we wanted to offer this to an older scout who would like to opportunity to get some experience and add this to a college application.  If there are any scouts interested, (must currently be at least 18 years old, and registered in the BSA) please email ryan.heikes@scouting.org and we can discuss further.  We have only one spot available so if you are interested, it will be first come first served.

Thank you for what you do in scouting, it makes a huge difference in our communities.  Scouting can be an overwhelming organization, That is why I am here to help with whatever you need.  If you need more kids in a certain den, let me know and we can do a special recruitment for that age group, or if you just need answers or advice, I’m here to help.  Please feel free to contact me with any issue or suggestion regarding scouting and I will make myself available.  Remember, if I don’t hear about a problem or a need, I cannot do anything about it.

As always, thank you for what you do for Scouting.
